IN THE WORKS:
PERSONALS, the novel. Based on my short story published in Grit Magazine. Ira is a 61 year old cattle rancher who lives alone on the family spread since the death of his brother. Emma is 46 and has spent her adult life caring for her mentally challenged brother and the family's hog operation in the Missouri Ozarks. Rodney is 28, and was born with an extra chromosome. Through chance and circumstance, Rodney becomes acquainted with Ira and decides he would be the perfect husband for his beloved Emmie. But there is a problem - how to get them together. He thinks this is solved when Emma responds to a personals ad in their county newspaper from Single Christian Male. He is sure that Ira is a Christian, so the ad must have been written by him. Unfortunately, Emma is not cooperating and has second thoughts about responding to the ad. She and Rodney are a package deal. Would any man want a middle aged woman and the responsibility of a brother-in-law whose life is challenged by Down syndrome?
